The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay campus is regularly involved in community upliftment, 041 looks at some of the latest projects headed up by the staff and students.
Students Donate Stationary To Fontein Primary School

A stationary drive for the learners of Fontein Primary School in Gelvandale was held on campus during The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay’s recent Orientation Week (O’Week). The purpose of the drive was to introduce first year students to the campus’ community engagement ethos. The initiative was a collaboration between the VC Voice (student committee which acts as a conduit of communication in a reciprocal manner to the wider student body and senior management) and the VC Cares (student volunteer body) committees. Once the first years participated in the initiative the broader student body had the opportunity to match or exceed the first years’ contribution. A combination of “gently” used and new stationery was collected and handed over to the school.
The school will establish needs through the staff and the stationary will be distributed accordingly.
“We cannot thank the students of The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay enough for thinking about our school for the stationary drive. We feel extremely honored and we will certainly ensure that the learners benefit from the donation, as it will make a difference.”, said Mr Gary Groenewald (Principal Fontein Primary School).
Marshmallow Egg Drive – K.K. Ncwana Primary School

Celebrating Easter with a marshmallow egg treat pack are the Foundation Phase learners from K.K.Ncwana Primary School located in Kwazakhele with some of The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Day staff and students. The packs were collated and donated to the school by the campus. The staff and students enjoyed spending time with the learners signing and colouring in at the school during this initiative.
Said Miss Madubedube (Head of Department K.K. Ncwana Primary School): “Thank you for the donation and thinking about our learners. It is such a wonderful gesture as for many of the learners this is the only holiday marshmallow treat, they will receive”.
The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay hopes to establish a relationship with K.K.Ncwana Primary School through teaching experience for the IIE Bachelor of Education students at the Primary School.
Sanitary Towel Drive For Die Heuwel Primary

Female learners from Die Heuwel Primary School will receive sanitary towel packs each month for the 2024 academic year. The aim of the drive is to ensure that the female learners are empowered to stay in school and not be absent during their menstrual cycle due to a lack of resources. This is a The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay campus yearlong community engagement initiative driven by VC
Cares, the campus’ student volunteer body.
“As a young lady, it is important to support the young girls in whichever way we can so that they can stay in school and work towards their goals. The IIE’s Varsity College students are always willing to give back to the community and we know students helping other students reinforces the spirit of Ubuntu which VC Cares is about. It is important for the girls to know they are not alone and to break the
stigma about menstruating”, said Sinesethu.
