As part of my ongoing beauty review series with Woolworths Walmer Park Beauty, I’ve been testing products that promise to make winter a little kinder to our skin.
Some products do exactly what they say on the packaging and nothing more. Others quietly surprise you by becoming the item you reach for over and over again throughout the day.
The Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Lip Protectant Stick SPF15 falls firmly into the second category.
Of course, its main job is keeping lips soft, smooth and protected, but after carrying it around in my handbag for a few weeks, I discovered a handful of other uses that make it feel like a bit of a beauty multitasker.
Rescue dry cuticles between manicures
My hands take a beating in winter, especially when I’m typing all day and washing them more often.
A quick swipe of the lip protectant over dry cuticles helps soften them and gives them a healthier appearance without needing a separate cuticle oil.
It’s one of those little tricks that makes your hands look instantly more polished.
Tame flyaways when you’re on the go
Now, before my fellow curly girls come for me, this isn’t going to magically give me sleek baby hairs. My curls have their own plans most days.
But if I’ve straightened my hair or I’m wearing it pulled back, a tiny amount on my fingertips helps smooth down those little flyaways that always seem determined to make an appearance at the worst possible moment.
No hairspray required.
Create a natural glossy highlight
If you’re heading straight from work to dinner and don’t have your makeup bag with you, a tiny dab on the high points of your cheeks can create a subtle dewy glow.
The keyword here is tiny.
Think healthy skin, not disco ball.
Soothe dry patches around your nose
Winter colds, allergies and chilly mornings can leave the skin around your nose feeling sore and flaky.
A little product around the area helps soften dry skin and makes it look less irritated.
It’s especially useful after a long day spent blowing your nose every five minutes.
Tame unruly brows
We’ve all had those mornings where one eyebrow seems determined to do its own thing.
A quick swipe over your brows can help keep stray hairs in place and create a more polished look without needing a separate brow gel.
It’s not going to replace your favourite brow product, but it’s a handy trick when you’re travelling, rushing out the door or trying to make your makeup bag work a little harder.
The verdict
Some beauty products have one job.
Others quietly become the product you keep reaching for over and over again.
The Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Lip Protectant Stick SPF15 definitely falls into the second category. It moisturises, softens and smooths lips while helping protect them from the elements, but it also earns bonus points for being one of those surprisingly versatile handbag heroes.
And while I love all the little beauty tricks it can help with, the moment it really earned its place in my handbag was when my son developed a serious case of winter lips.
You know the look: dry, cracked and somehow getting worse despite repeated reminders to drink water.
A few applications later and there was a noticeable improvement. As a parent, that’s the kind of result that gets your attention.
So whether you’re using it on your cuticles, brows, dry skin or simply as the lip treatment it was designed to be, this little stick has become one of those products I’m never without.
