The Metro recently hosted a Women’s Empowerment Seminar that brought together women from across the region to reflect, learn, and share strategies for building a more equal and inclusive future. The event highlighted the many roles women play in society and reinforced the urgent need for collective action against gender inequality and gender-based violence.

Celebrating Women’s Contributions

Speakers emphasized the importance of honoring women in every sphere—from mothers and grandmothers to entrepreneurs, workers, traditional leaders, and public officials. The tone was one of unity and appreciation, calling on women to collaborate rather than compete, and to recognize each other’s value.

Leadership and Economic Participation

The seminar placed strong focus on the need for greater representation of women in leadership and the workforce. Access to opportunities, funding, and capacity-building were highlighted as essential tools for enabling women’s full participation in the economy. Attendees were reminded that sustainable development and poverty reduction cannot be achieved without women’s inclusion.

Collaboration and Empowerment

Rejecting the “pulling each other down” mentality, participants were urged to support one another through networking, mentorship, and shared knowledge. Collaboration, speakers noted, is a key driver of empowerment and progress.

Tackling Gender-Based Violence

A significant portion of the seminar addressed the ongoing crisis of gender-based violence (GBV) and oppression. The National Strategic Plan on GBV, particularly Pillar Five, Women’s Economic Empowerment, was cited as a critical framework. Financial independence was identified as a vital step in breaking cycles of abuse, with a call for stronger collective action against violence.

Women in Politics

South Africa’s democracy already reflects strong participation by women, who make up a large proportion of voters, elected officials, and election workers. The seminar highlighted the legal requirement for fair representation of women in party lists and local government structures, while also encouraging more women to stand for office and claim their space in decision-making.

Opportunities and Resources

Beyond the discussions, the event offered practical engagement. Stalls and exhibitions, including those from the IEC and agricultural sector, provided women with information on available programs and resources. Attendees were encouraged to explore these avenues to advance their personal and professional growth.

Vision for the Future

The seminar concluded with a forward-looking message: the unity of women is central to emancipation, equality, and national progress. A collective commitment to empowerment, development, and an end to oppression was described as the pathway to lasting transformation.

The Metro’s Women’s Empowerment Seminar left attendees with a clear message—women’s voices, leadership, and collaboration are not optional for South Africa’s future. They are essential.
