What Nelson Mandela Bay Told Us About Love This Valentine’s

By Eleanor Douglas-Meyers

When we launched our Valentine’s giveaway with Boardwalk Hotel and Casino, we thought we were celebrating romance.

What we didn’t expect was the depth.

The letters that came in were not about grand gestures or over-the-top declarations. They were not about perfection. They were about presence.

Love came in from siblings, built in best friends who have walked through every stage of life together, protecting, encouraging and standing firm.

Love came through sickness and health, partners who quietly lived out their vows in hospital waiting rooms, through diagnoses, through chemotherapy and through recovery. The kind of love that does not make noise but never leaves.

Love came from adult children wanting to honour parents who sacrificed everything. From wives recognising husbands who carry families on their shoulders without complaint. From husbands acknowledging the unseen emotional labour their wives give every single day.

There were nominations for mothers who never put themselves first. For police officers who run towards danger. For breadwinners who have not taken a proper break in years. For partners who simply show up consistently and reliably without applause.

And that was the thread running through every entry.

Not a spectacle.

Steadiness.

Not performance.

Presence.

The winning letter described a woman as the heart of her family, someone who puts everyone else first, who carries responsibility with grace and who loves in the most practical everyday ways. It was simple. It was sincere. And it reflected something so real about how love actually works.

This competition reminded us that love is not always loud. It does not always arrive wrapped in flowers. Sometimes it looks like resilience. Sometimes it looks like loyalty. Sometimes it looks like staying.

Boardwalk’s Valentine’s giveaway gave us the opportunity to celebrate one of these stories publicly. But reading through every message reminded us that Nelson Mandela Bay is filled with quiet heroes whose love shapes families and strengthens homes.

A heartfelt thank you to Boardwalk Hotel and Casino for partnering with us to turn one beautiful love story into a real-life spoil.

And if last week proved anything, it is this:

Love is alive.
Love is steady.
And in this city, love runs deep.
