GGEBERHA is alive with talent and promise and Ukhanyo Trust performing group is a true reflection of this. Based in New Brighton, this multi-talented group was first established in 2020. It has, since grown to 32 members with the youngest being a mere 6 years-old.
The group was established as a way to showcase and nurture New Brighton’s talent, and also as a way to give the local township’s youth an opportunity to grow outside of their daily challenges. To solidify this goal, Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism has brought Ukhanyo Trust on board as they embark on their Township Tour project.
The Ukhanyo Trust consists of singers, dancers, actors and actresses who will perform for local and international tourists as they explore the streets of New Brighton. Luvo, from Jama Tours sees this as an opportunity to empower the New Brighton youth, who are affected by poverty, violence and drug addiction. Managing Director of Ukhanyo Trust, Ndalwentle Sonto, echoes this vision and says that the goal for the group is to be able to change the situation that the teens and young adults in New Brighton are faced with. While many turn to drugs and crime, there is a vast amount of talent and determination amongst the New Brighton youth. Ndalwentle has hopes that the group will have members who’ll find fame in film, television or stage in the future.
Asked where he envisions the Ukhanyo Trust being in 5-10 years,Ndalwentle says “I picture [us] going far in 5-10 years, where we’ll produce good actors and actresses, dancers and choreographers. I see [us] performing in other countries, being successful and achieving everything we’ve wanted and needed.”
If anything, this performing group takes your breath away with it’s energy and raw talent. They exude professionalism and are the perfect team to showcase New Brighton and South Africa’s Xhosa culture.
Gqeberha, we truly do have talent.
