After struggling with the realities of studying online as a new father, entrepreneur Rudi Boshoff set out to build the kind of education system he wished he had. The result is Bridgewater Academic Institute, an online tertiary education provider designed to combine flexible digital learning with real human academic support.
The 2 A.M. Student
Rudi Boshoff never went to university. In the 1990s he could not afford the fees. Instead he taught himself cellphone repair from home, bought his first property at 19, and built a business portfolio spanning telecommunications and property by his 30s.
The degrees he never earned became footnotes rather than limitations until fatherhood sent him back to school and revealed what online learning was missing.
At 2 a.m., Boshoff would sit with a newborn in one arm and a textbook in the other.
“It was meant to fill the quiet hours,” he says. “I fell in love with education, the ideas, the rigour, the problem solving. But I quickly realised that a screen alone was not enough. I needed a real life human supervisor to help me actually graduate.”
The Prospective Engagement Crisis
Online tertiary education providers have expanded reach, flexibility, and affordability. However, the sector continues to face persistent engagement challenges.
Some international programmes have reported completion rates as low as 5 to 15 percent, highlighting the gap between enrollment and successfully completing a qualification.
Globally, 264 million people need post secondary education. In South Africa, rising matric pass rates are increasing demand for tertiary education while campus capacity remains limited.
Many prospective students face additional barriers including cost, geography, mobility limitations, caregiving responsibilities, demanding work schedules, self doubt, or neurodiversity that makes traditional learning environments challenging.
“Higher education is hard,” Boshoff explains.
“The parent studying at 2 a.m., the professional managing deadlines, the student questioning if they belong, the learner with ADHD needing different pacing. They are not unusual cases. They are the majority.”
In response, Boshoff founded Bridgewater Academic Institute (BAI) in 2023.
The institution focuses on human centred online education, combining independent study with access to dedicated academic supervisors.
A Human-Centred Model
Bridgewater Academic Institute offers internationally accredited undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications supported by supervisors who provide mentorship, accountability, and flexible academic timetables.
Students can enroll throughout the year rather than waiting for traditional semester start dates.
The model keeps the benefits of online education including flexibility, global access, affordability, and continuity while ensuring students receive the personal support they need to succeed.
BAI has already begun to grow.
In 2025, when the founder and lead investor of a long established online education provider retired and the institution closed, students were encouraged to continue their studies with BAI. The transition helped validate the demand for human centred academic support in digital education.
Evidence Supports the Approach
Boshoff’s experience reflects broader trends in the education sector.
UNICEF’s Digital Education Strategy 2025 to 2030 highlights the importance of human centred online learning that combines technology with personal guidance to improve student outcomes.
The Henley Global Mobility Report 2025 also notes increasing restrictions on international student mobility, reinforcing the growing value of borderless education models.
“Technology, AI, and automation have transformed online study, and investing in them is worthwhile,” says Boshoff.
“But technology alone is not enough. It is most effective when paired with a human centred approach to education online. Students do best when they have both flexible courses and someone to help them stay on track.”

Consider whether the qualification is recognised and whether the teaching style aligns with how you learn best.
Understand the full financial picture upfront
Be clear about tuition costs, technology requirements, available student support, and any additional expenses.
Clarify timetables and assessment formats
Some institutions run intensive modules while others spread learning across the year. Choose a structure that fits your life.
Use digital tools strategically
Engage fully with lectures, forums, notes, and recordings to strengthen your learning experience.
