A record number of men have signed up for the 2026 Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer, presented by Isuzu Motors South Africa, following the announcement of the Prostate Foundation of South Africa as one of this year’s beneficiaries.

For the first time in the event’s 28-year history, an organisation supporting a cancer that affects men exclusively has been selected as a beneficiary, alongside CHOC, the Childhood Cancer Foundation in the Eastern Cape.

“For the first time in 28 years, a nonprofit organisation supporting a cancer condition that only affects men was selected, and we are delighted to see the response from men in Algoa Country,” says Algoa FM managing director Alfie Jay.

Raising Awareness About Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among South African men, with research indicating a lifetime risk of up to one in 23. Some studies suggest the figure could be as high as one in 15.

Early detection remains crucial.

“The good news is that prostate cancer survival rates are close to 100% when caught early, but drop significantly if the disease reaches an advanced stage. Our message is ‘get tested’,” says Jay.

He encourages men over 50, as well as those with a family history of prostate cancer, to speak to their healthcare providers about regular screening.

Walking for a Worthy Cause

Funds raised through this year’s Big Walk will help purchase essential diagnostic equipment for Frere Hospital in Buffalo City, Provincial Hospital in Nelson Mandela Bay and George Hospital.

A portion of the proceeds will also go towards purchasing a double-cab vehicle to help CHOC staff reach cancer patients in rural areas of the Eastern Cape.

The five-kilometre walk takes place on Saturday, 31 October 2026, starting at 08:00, with starting points in Nelson Mandela Bay, Buffalo City and George.

There’s Still Time to Enter

In-person registrations will be available in Nelson Mandela Bay from Wednesday to Friday, and in Buffalo City and George on Thursday and Friday, between 12:00 and 19:00.

“According to the weather forecasts, Saturday will be a perfect day for a five kilometre walk with those affected by cancer, family, and friends,” says Jay.

“The atmosphere is incredible, with people from all walks of life and backgrounds walking side by side with a common purpose. It really is an uplifting experience.”

Whether you’re walking in support of a loved one, remembering someone lost to cancer or simply showing solidarity, the Big Walk offers an opportunity for the community to come together for a meaningful cause.
