Pre-teen Book Recommendations From An 11-Year-Old

In honour of Youth Month, we are adding a new feature to the 041online line-up in the form of 041Junior a kid’s review column headed up by 11-year-old, Aidan Jesse.

For week one we start with Pre-teen book recommendations, for the upcoming school holidays

Wonder by R. J Palicio

What the book was about: A boy named August (I wonder what happened to the other months) with an illness that makes him self-conscious, he was homeschooled for a long time and is going to school for the first time. The book isn’t a true story like I thought – but the illness they speak about is (Treacher Collins Syndrome)

What is the tone of the story: I found it pretty serious

Would I read it again: I probably would because I liked the story but then again it’s pretty long and I’m a lazy reader

What did it teach me: It taught me that some illnesses can be really scary and don’t judge a book by its cover – I don’t mean the actual book I mean people (don’t judge people) since this cover is nice and the book is nice, so it would be okay judging it, but you know what I mean, right?

What did you think of the cover: I thought it was pretty cool but some parts like the word wonder we’re hard to read

Judy Moody And The Bad Luck Charm by Megan Mcdonald(ee i ee i o)

What was the book about: It’s about Judy Moody and a bad luck charm duh, like the title (I’d like to put the face palm emoji here)

What is the tone of the story: I found it pretty funny

Would I read it again: Yeah, I like the art style (there are cartoon-style drawings inside)

What did it teach me: I learnt that Moody is her surname and not her personality

What did you think of the cover: I really like the art

Middle School Ultimate Showdown by James Patterson

What was the book about: About a middle school – two siblings’ thoughts about middle school to be exact – with a bunch of activities to follow along with

What is the tone of the story: It’s pretty funny I guess

Would I read it again: I already did, but yes I would read this again

What did it teach me: Uhhhh this isn’t really a teaching book, it’s more of an activity book.

What did you think of cover: Nice but I find it weird that the two people are in different art styles.

A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snickets – The Slippery Slope

What was the book about: A series of unfortunate events (it’s literally the title (if I got 1 cent for every time I read a book where the title is a spoiler for the storyline, I’d have 3 cents (wow that’s a lot of brackets)))

What is tone: Very serious

Would I read it again: It’s a nice book but too long and it’s scary(<-spooky)

What did it teach me: uhhh spooky¯\_(ツ)_/¯ oh and that team work makes the dream work

What did you think of the cover: It’s still scary

Double Dork Diaries 2 by Rachel Renee Russell

(I haven’t finished this book yet)

What was the book about: It’s a book made to look like a diary owned by Nikki J Maxwell

What is tone: I thought it was kinda silly but still seems seriousish

Would I read it again: I didn’t even read it once so when I finish it I might

What did it teach me: Mckenzie is mean (so far)

What did you think of the cover: I like the art, which is similar to Judy Moody and the really long name
