Newly Trained Traffic Officers Honoured in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality

In a vibrant and spirited Pass-Out Parade, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality officially welcomed 156 newly trained traffic officers, ushering in a new era of road safety leadership in the Eastern Cape.’

 The ceremony, held on Friday, 6 December 2024, saw the Honourable Xolile Nqatha, Eastern Cape MEC for Transport and Community Safety, bestow recognition upon the graduates alongside representatives from the Eastern Cape Department of Transport and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr Babalwa Lobishe.

These officers, representing the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Buffalo City Municipality, Elundini Municipality, and Mandeni Municipality, took a solemn oath to uphold the law and prioritise road safety. This marked the beginning of their critical mission to enforce traffic regulations and ensure safer roads across the province.

In his address, MEC Nqatha called on the new officers to embody the principles of good governance and dedication. “Your role goes beyond law enforcement; you are protectors of life and exemplars of service. Let your commitment inspire trust and safety among the citizens you serve,” he emphasised.

The deployment of these officers is expected to significantly enhance road safety, paving the way for broader economic growth. The Executive Mayor, Cllr Lobishe, highlighted the critical intersection of safety and development. “Law enforcement and road safety are pillars of a stable society. They support an efficient economy, encouraging both local and international tourism by fostering an environment free from lawlessness,” she said.

The timing of this recruitment aligns perfectly with the festive season and the peak cruise tourism period. With an influx of visitors anticipated, the additional officers will help curb issues like drinking and driving, ensuring smooth and safe travel for all.

Speaking on behalf of the graduates, Alungile Cawe expressed gratitude and readiness to serve. “This journey has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. I am prepared to ensure road safety and uphold the law with diligence and integrity,” Cawe said.

As these newly trained officers step into their roles, their impact is expected to resonate well beyond road safety, strengthening the fabric of the community and supporting a prosperous, law-abiding Eastern Cape.
