new safety and security wardens for NMB

In its mission to reclaim the central business districts, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has recruited 32 new safety and security wardens that have been deployed to enhance safety for residents, tourists and businesses.

As one of the country’s tourism destination of choice, NMBM’s Safety and Security Portfolio Head, Cllr Stag Mitchell said it was essential for the Metro to be proactive in dealing with crime and lawlessness working with other law enforcement stakeholders.

The priority areas in Gqeberha have been identified as the Gqeberha Central Business District, City Hall precinct, Donkin Reserve, Fort Frederick, St George’s Park and other tourist attractions areas.

Due to the severity of the challenge and limited resources, the sub-directorate acquired additional personnel through the Extended Public Works Programme.

“On Monday, 12 February 2024, the security sub directorate Directorate started the crime prevention operations in the identified areas. This programme includes Kariega and Despatch. The officers have completed the necessary security training and are registered as security officers with Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA).”

“The initiative aims to deter crime in the respective areas and monitor the implementation of bylaws. An Induction session was held to brief members on the different bylaws of the Municipality. Five bylaw enforcement officers from our security division were deployed to accompany the new officers. The issue of illegal trading, unlawful parking, vagrants and other bylaw and crime related concerns will be prioritized,” said MMC Mitchell.

The guards have hit the ground running, issuing eight warnings to illegal traders, confiscating 11 knives, three scissors, 11 dagga pipe and six needles among other objects.

The officers have been assigned for a five month period for now.

MMC Mitchell said patrols and deployment will intensify when cruise liners dock in the Bay in order for tourists to be accompanied by the teams.

“The aim of the visible patrollers is to reinforce safety and security within our public spaces and to restore peace and stability. This will also enhance tourism and boost the economy of our Metro,” he added.
