Nelson Mandela Bay to Host 2026 Skål International World Congress

It’s official. Nelson Mandela Bay has been confirmed as the host city for the 2026 Skål International World Congress, following a standout presentation at this year’s Congress in Cusco, Peru.

Held from 25 to 30 September 2025, the Peru event brought together over 400 delegates from more than 30 countries, including top tourism executives, decision-makers, and Skål representatives, all focused on sustainable tourism, global trends, and growing the business events (MICE) sector.

Nelson Mandela Bay’s winning bid impressed delegates with its strong tourism infrastructure, vibrant cultural offerings, and commitment to sustainability. Out of 197 eligible delegates, 192 voted in favour of Nelson Mandela Bay, a clear sign of global confidence in the city’s readiness to host a world-class event.

The South African delegation, led by Acting EDTA Director Wandisile Makwabe, with MMC Yolisa Pali-Jongilanga, Doné Louw, and Siphokazi Ngombane, engaged directly with international tourism leaders, Skål executives, and sponsors throughout the week. Many attendees were key industry figures, from hotel owners and tour operators to travel tech innovators, making the Congress an ideal platform to position Nelson Mandela Bay as a premier destination for MICE and tourism investment.

The Cusco programme featured workshops, plenary sessions, gala dinners, and cultural tours, including a visit to the Sacred Valley, offering valuable insights into how Nelson Mandela Bay can design a 2026 Congress that meets and exceeds international standards.

Participation in the 2025 event also helped the Bay team secure global partnerships, attract potential investment, and build anticipation for 2026. The inclusion of local cultural and experiential elements will be key to ensuring the upcoming Congress reflects Nelson Mandela Bay’s own unique identity and warm hospitality.

Hosting the 2026 Skål International World Congress is a strategic win for Nelson Mandela Bay. Beyond global visibility, it promises economic growth, business opportunities for local SMMEs, and a chance to further cement South Africa’s reputation as a leader in sustainable business tourism.
