Nelson Mandela Bay Steps Up to Fight Litter: New Refuse Bins Rolled Out

As summer approaches, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) is taking a bold step to combat littering and promote sustainable waste management by placing refuse bins in strategic areas across Gqeberha and Kariega. This initiative aligns with the Metro’s commitment to keeping the Friendly City clean and welcoming, especially as tourists and residents prepare to enjoy the vibrant outdoors.

A Cleaner City for All

Public Health Mayoral Committee Member, Cllr Thsonono Buyeye, highlighted the perfect timing of this rollout. With the holiday season nearing, efforts to maintain cleanliness in high-traffic areas like Korsten, Cape Road, and the airport are yielding visible results.

“We are making sure our City is clean—not just for summer, but as a new standard. Bins play a critical role in preventing litter, giving people the option to dispose of their waste responsibly,” said MMC Buyeye.

Winning the Fight Against Illegal Dumping

The initiative is part of a broader beautification and waste management drive aimed at curbing illegal dumping. MMC Buyeye believes this project is a step toward a cleaner and more attractive Metro, which brings added benefits like boosting tourism.

“We are starting to see more tourists arriving, and we want to ensure our City reflects the best version of itself. This is just the beginning,” Buyeye added.

Strategic Placement for Maximum Impact

The first phase will prioritize central business districts (CBDs) and beachfront areas, anticipating an influx of residents and visitors during the summer months.

Public Health Executive Director Sizwe Mvunelwa called on residents and visitors alike to play their part. “We just want cooperation. The Municipality is providing the necessary receptacles to keep the Metro clean, and with everyone’s support, we can achieve this.”

Keep Nelson Mandela Bay Beautiful

The rollout is a clear invitation to everyone in Nelson Mandela Bay to embrace sustainable waste practices. By utilizing the newly placed bins, residents and visitors can help preserve the Metro’s beauty and ensure it remains a premier destination.
