The curtains are set to rise on one of Nelson Mandela Bay’s longest-running performing arts events as the Nelson Mandela Bay Dance Festival returns to the Savoy Theatre from 24 to 29 August 2026.
Now celebrating its 45th year, the festival promises six days of outstanding performances, friendly competition and community spirit, while also shining a spotlight on a worthy local animal welfare cause.
More than 800 dancers to take the stage
This year’s festival has attracted 29 dance studios and 807 registered dancers, making it the biggest edition yet. Audiences can look forward to a record-breaking 1 692 performances spanning a variety of dance styles and age groups.
Founded by Jennifer Abraham and Hermione Ballinger, the festival has become a highlight on Nelson Mandela Bay’s arts calendar, bringing together dancers, teachers and families from across the region.
Alongside the competition, participating dancers will also benefit from a masterclass, giving them the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals while showcasing their talent throughout the week.
Dance meets compassion
Adding a unique dimension to this year’s event is internationally experienced adjudicator Brigitte Reeve Taylor, who is also a passionate animal welfare advocate.
Reeve Taylor will bring the Dancers Love Dogs initiative to the festival, encouraging attendees to support the Animal Anti Cruelty League (AACL).
An AACL donation station will be available throughout the festival in memory of the late Linda Louise Swain, a respected local theatre personality and dedicated animal welfare volunteer whose rescue work touched countless lives in Nelson Mandela Bay.
“NMBDF has always been about community, creativity and care and this year we’re proud to bring those values together by supporting the Animal Anti Cruelty League in memory of Linda Louise Swain,” said Reeve Taylor.
Gala evening to celebrate the week’s best performances
The festival will conclude with a gala evening on Saturday, 29 August, where audiences can enjoy highlights from the week’s performances before the presentation of the festival awards.

Daily festival tickets are available at the door for R50 per person, while tickets for the gala evening cost R150 per person and can be booked through Webtickets.
