COMMUNITY | Numbers Walk Together for Cancer at 2026 Algoa FM Big Walk

Thousands of people from all walks of life came together on Saturday, 31 October, for the 2026 Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer, presented by Isuzu Motors South Africa, with record participation across Gqeberha, George and Buffalo City.

Now in its 28th year, the annual event brought together 22 700 participants across the three centres, with additional virtual walkers taking part from across South Africa and abroad.

More than 19 000 walkers gathered at the Nelson Mandela Bay start, many wearing T-shirts or carrying banners bearing the names of loved ones affected by cancer. While the event continues to grow, its significance extends far beyond the numbers, with every step representing a personal story of love, loss, hope or survival.

Algoa FM managing director Alfie Jay said the event remains a powerful reminder of what communities can achieve when they come together for a common cause.

“What I always find inspiring about the Big Walk, now in its 28th year, is that the people of Algoa Country are united and connected behind a common cause,” said Jay.

“Political and other differences are simply set aside as we connect as people, with a common objective – to support those affected by cancer.”

The event also recorded significant growth beyond Nelson Mandela Bay, with participation increasing by 30% in George and 20% in Buffalo City compared to last year. Both centres have hosted Big Walk start points since 2022.

Isuzu Motors South Africa senior manager of corporate communications, Sharné Woods, reflected on the personal stories behind the thousands of participants.

“Thousands of people with thousands of stories walked together with one purpose,” she said.

“We may be walking for different people, but we walk with one heart. And that is what connected truly means.”

This year’s beneficiaries are the Prostate Foundation of South Africa and CHOC, the Childhood Cancer Foundation in the Eastern Cape.

With prostate cancer receiving particular attention in 2026, organisers also recorded the highest number of male participants in the event’s history.

Funds raised will contribute towards purchasing essential prostate cancer diagnostic equipment for Frere Hospital in Buffalo City, Provincial Hospital in Nelson Mandela Bay and George Hospital. CHOC will also benefit through the purchase of a twin-cab vehicle to support its work.

For the thousands who took part, the Big Walk was more than a fundraising event. It was an opportunity to remember those lost, celebrate survivors and stand alongside families still navigating the challenges of cancer.

And as the crowds made their way through the streets of Algoa Country, the message was clear: while every participant may have walked for someone different, they were united in their determination to make a difference.
