Multimillion-rand Kouga La-Mer Pump Station pipeline upgrade nearing completion

The R9.7 million upgrade of the pipeline from the La-Mer Sewer Pump Station in Diaz Road, Jeffreys Bay to Sewer Pump Station 4A in Koraal Street is making steady progress.

Following some delays that shifted the expected completion date from the end of June 2024 to mid-September, the project is now back on track.

This upgrade will significantly improve operational efficiency, enhance overall performance, and drastically reduce pipe breakages and sewer spillages.

“The project involves the installation of a new 350mm diameter Class 12 uPVC sewer rising main,” said Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman. “This sewer main connects the La Mer Pump Station to Pump Station 4A, which will later be linked to Pump Station 4B, and ultimately to the Jeffreys Bay Waste Water Treatment Works.

“The 1 040m-long pipeline, running along Duine, Pell, Prospect, and Koraal Streets, was laid along the left-hand edge of the roadway, requiring the saw-cutting and excavation of existing asphalt and layer works.”

Only minor tasks remain to complete the pipeline installation.

Once the pipeline work is finished, the road surfaces of Duine, Pell, and Prospect Streets will be resurfaced and marked accordingly. Resurfacing is expected to take place between 19 and 23 August 2024.

“The upgrade of the sewer pipeline is a vital investment in preventing sewage spills and enhancing the efficiency of our infrastructure,” Bornman added. “It will also reduce the risk of breakdowns and minimise the need for costly repairs.”

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of our residents throughout the construction period of this project.”
