Nelson Mandela Bay’s beachfront is once again preparing to host one of Africa’s most demanding endurance events as IRONMAN South Africa African Championship returns to the city.
Athletes from around the world will gather at Hobie Beach in Summerstrand to take on the legendary triathlon challenge, racing through a course that showcases the Bay’s coastline before finishing along the beachfront.
The internationally recognised event has become a regular highlight on Nelson Mandela Bay’s sporting calendar, drawing both professional competitors and age-group athletes to the city.
One of the Toughest Races in Sport
The full IRONMAN distance is widely regarded as one of the most challenging one-day endurance events in the world.
Competitors must complete three disciplines in a single race:
• 3.8 km open-water swim
• 180 km cycling course
• 42.2 km marathon run
Athletes begin with the swim at Hobie Beach before moving onto the cycling leg along the Bay’s coastal roads. The race concludes with the marathon run along the Nelson Mandela Bay beachfront.
More Than One Race
In addition to the full IRONMAN race, the event programme also includes the ISUZU 5150 Nelson Mandela Bay triathlon, which features a shorter format.
That race includes:
• 1.5 km swim
• 40 km cycle
• 10 km run
The shorter race forms part of the broader IRONMAN event programme hosted in Nelson Mandela Bay.
A Global Sporting Event for the Bay
IRONMAN South Africa has grown into one of the most internationally recognised sporting events hosted in Nelson Mandela Bay.
Each year the race attracts athletes, supporters and visitors from around the world, showcasing the city’s beachfront and coastal routes to a global audience.
For locals, it remains one of the most exciting moments on the Bay’s sporting calendar as competitors push themselves to complete one of the toughest endurance challenges in sport.
