Did you know that South Africa has recycled over 13 million tonnes of paper and packaging in the past decade? That’s enough to fill nearly 16,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools! As we reflect on Global Recycling Day, here’s how you can be part of the solution.
The Power of Paper Recycling
According to the Paper Manufacturers Association of South Africa (PAMSA), the 1.2 million tonnes of paper products recovered in 2024 alone have saved massive landfill space while supporting the circular economy. Yet, a lot of recyclable material still ends up in landfills or as litter.
Simple Ways to Make a Difference
1. Set Up a Recycling System
Keep your recyclables separate from regular waste to prevent contamination. Place a dedicated bin in your home for clean, dry paper and cardboard.
2. Know What to Recycle
YES PLEASE: Office paper, cardboard boxes, cereal boxes, pizza boxes, newspapers, magazines, egg cartons, toilet roll cores, and milk/juice cartons.
NO THANKS: Tissue paper, kitchen towels, wax-coated packaging, laminated paper, nappies, and dirty paper plates.
3. Remove Non-Paper Elements
Detach plastic windows, metal spirals, and staples before recycling paper-based items.
4. Get It to the Right Place
If your municipality doesn’t offer recycling collection, try these options:
- Leave recyclables for informal waste collectors.
- Support small recycling businesses.
- Drop off paper at shopping centre recycling zones.
- Participate in community recycling initiatives.
Every small effort counts toward reducing waste and preserving resources. Join the movement and make a lasting impact!
