Foo Jiu Review: All-You-Can-Eat Sushi, Killer Cocktails & Great Vibes in Gqeberha

We recently pulled into Foo Jiu Walmer for their all-you-can-eat sushi, and to be honest, I was more excited than I care to admit. I’d heard good things, and I’m always down to see how much sushi a person can eat before they start regretting life choices. (Spoiler: We didn’t reach that point.)

The vibe was great, relaxed, welcoming, not the usual frantic pace you sometimes get with buffet-style setups. The staff were super friendly, and at one point, the manager joked that the sushi chefs were getting bored because we weren’t ordering fast enough. That sorted that out quickly.

The food? Solid across the board. Sushi was fresh, tasty, and the deep-fried options in particular were a hit, crunchy, warm, and comforting in the best way. There are other options too: chow mein, spring rolls, crispy chicken… but next time I’ll be skipping the hot dishes to make more room for sushi. Lesson learned.

Drinks were just as impressive. I had sake for the first time, and surprisingly liked it. My wife, not so much. Said it tasted like ethanol and that we could probably light our farts on fire. She might’ve had a point, especially considering half her jam jar cocktail ended up on the table. That said, Foo Jiu makes a mean Singapore Sling, and their cocktails overall are genuinely delicious, not the watered-down kind you sometimes get at buffet joints.

Price-wise, it’s surprisingly affordable:

  • R198 per person at Walmer (where we went)
  • R250 at Boardwalk, which includes a cocktail, we’re doing that next time, in the name of science.

All in all, Foo Jiu’s the kind of place you go back to. The food’s good, the people are kind, and you walk out full and happy, which is all I really ask for on a weeknight out.
