FAMILY | Movies to add to your October school holiday watch list

The October school holidays are here, which means parents across Nelson Mandela Bay are once again looking for ways to fill those suddenly very long days.

Ster-Kinekor recently sent out its October holiday movie line-up, and there are a few titles that caught our attention, from new animated adventures and superhero blockbusters to some serious throwback cinema.

So, if a movie date is on the holiday agenda, here are a few titles worth adding to your watch list.

Forgotten Island

If you’re looking for something the whole family can watch, Forgotten Island brings adventure, friendship and a little bit of magic to the big screen.

The animated film follows two best friends who become stranded in the mysterious world of Nakali, where they discover that their only chance of escaping could cost them their shared lifetime of memories.

Directed by Joel Crawford and Januel P. Mercado, the film features the voices of Dave Franco, Jenny Slate and Manny Jacinto.

Avengers: Endgame returns to the big screen

Yes, we’re going back to 2019.

Avengers: Endgame is returning to cinemas for a special encore run, giving younger Marvel fans who may have missed its original release the chance to experience it on the big screen.

Following the events of Infinity War, the remaining Avengers come together in a desperate attempt to undo the devastation caused by Thanos.

Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner lead the cast.

At just over three hours long, though, this is probably not the movie to choose when someone suggests “just quickly” going to the cinema.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day

For the older kids and teens, Peter Parker is back.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day sees Spider-Man trying to balance ordinary life with the considerably less ordinary responsibility of protecting his city while navigating a world where his old allies no longer remember his true identity.

Tom Holland returns alongside Zendaya and Jacob Batalon.

Coyote vs ACME

After spending years ordering increasingly elaborate products from ACME Corporation and having almost all of them spectacularly fail, Wile E. Coyote has finally decided to do something about it.

He’s suing.

Coyote vs ACME mixes live action with the classic Looney Tunes characters as Wile E. Coyote takes the company responsible for all those faulty gadgets to court.

Will Forte, John Cena and Lana Condor star in the comedy, making this one that could work just as well for nostalgic parents as it does for the kids.

Matilda is back for R50

This is where the nostalgia really kicks in.

The beloved 1996 adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Matilda is returning to the big screen as part of Ster-Kinekor’s October Throwback Cinema offering, with tickets priced at just R50.

Mara Wilson stars as Matilda Wormwood, the exceptionally clever little girl dealing with neglectful parents, the terrifying Miss Trunchbull and the discovery that she can move things with her mind.

If you grew up with Matilda, Miss Honey, Bruce Bogtrotter and that infamous chocolate cake scene, this could be a good excuse to introduce the next generation to them.

Angry Birds joins the R50 throwbacks

Another family favourite is also getting the Throwback Cinema treatment.

The Angry Birds Movie returns from Friday, 2 October, with tickets also priced at R50 as part of Ster-Kinekor’s holiday offering.

The animated comedy follows Red, Chuck and Bomb, three outsiders who become suspicious when a group of mysterious green pigs suddenly arrives on their island.

Making a holiday movie date more affordable

Beyond the R50 Throwback Cinema titles, Ster-Kinekor has a few offers that could help make a family movie outing a little easier on the budget.

SK Club members can access half-price movie tickets on Tuesdays, while the Epic Deal includes a 2D or 3D movie ticket, regular drink and popcorn for R169.90 from Monday to Friday.

Discovery Vitality members aged between two and 18 can also access free movies before 19:00, subject to the programme’s terms, while Pick n Pay Smart Shopper members can exchange R70 worth of Smart Shopper points for a movie ticket.

With superheroes, animation and a couple of movies parents probably remember from their own childhoods, there are plenty of excuses for a cinema date this October holiday.

And if you’re choosing Matilda, we fully support pretending the outing is entirely for the children.

Before you go: Movie availability, dates and screening times vary between cinemas. Check the current programme at your preferred Nelson Mandela Bay cinema before heading out.
