Johannesburg-based WGRUV Dance Company returns to Gqeberha with its contemporary ballet programme “JUXTAPOSE” at the Mandela Bay Theatre Complex from 30 April to 2 May 2026
The show will take place at the Mandela Bay Theatre Complex from 30 April to 2 May 2026, marking the company’s second visit to the city following the success of their previous production, Art Effect, which was staged in Gqeberha in 2025.
Tickets range from R99 to R220, with group discounts available, and can be booked via www.webtickets.co.za.
A programme exploring the human experience
Rooted in classical ballet but driven by contemporary movement language, JUXTAPOSE places the human body under tension physically, emotionally, and symbolically. The performance explores what it means to remain human during moments of strain, exposure, and transformation.
The programme features four works that examine identity, memory, and personal growth through dance.
The evening opens with Human Exposure, choreographed by Holly Gruver, which explores vulnerability and presence through music-driven movement.
In Not Forgotten, choreographed by Lex Gruver, the focus shifts to hidden histories and silent grief, inspired by lives lost under oppressive policies of the past.
Rooms Rewired, choreographed by Holly Gruver in collaboration with dancer Vuyelwa Phota, explores identity through a process of learning and unlearning as transformation unfolds.
The programme concludes with Waxing Moon, a work by internationally recognised choreographer Robyn Mineko Williams, which reflects on gradual growth and renewal.
Across all four works, JUXTAPOSE uses contrast between stillness and motion to create a powerful reflection on resilience and the shared human experience.

Young dancers in Gqeberha will also have the opportunity to train with WGRUV’s performers during an exclusive ballet and contemporary dance workshop.
