Women For Change “Run For Her” Virtual Event And How You Can Do Your Part

FAZIELA HARRIS-DAVIDS:

WOMEN For Change is giving running enthusiasts, regardless of fitness level, the chance to “Run For Her” and make a change in the fight against GBVF by taking part in their virtual race.

According to stats released by Women for Change SA, 3914 women were murdered in South Africa between April 2022 and March 2023. The organisation is currently at the forefront of advocating for the rights of South African women and children in an attempt to drastically reduce the shocking figures.

041 chatted with Sabrina Walter, Chairperson of Women for Change (WFC) about their upcoming event:

What is WFC?

Women For Change (WFC) is a non-profit organization that advocates for the constitutional rights of women and children in South Africa, founded in 2016. WFC educates, advocates, and campaigns on Gender-Based Violence & Femicide (GBVF), Human Rights, and Gender Equality daily. WFC assists victims and families daily with resources such as medical assistance, legal assistance, counsellors, information about GBVF and how to handle each case.

Where did the idea for “Run for Her” originate?

Since 2018 we have hosted races and fun runs to raise awareness against Gender-Based Violence in South Africa. Due to Covid-19 in 2020, all our running events had to be cancelled. During the lockdown, we started with successful virtual races to keep raising awareness and more than 10 000 people joined us in 2020 doing our Virtual Races.

Virtual races give everyone the chance to participate in this great event and actively demand change and do something to end gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF). Besides creating change, this is also a great way to stay healthy, fit and empowered during Women’s Month.

How can people get involved?

Everyone can join our Run For Her Virtual Race during Women’s Month in August 2023.  You’ll be participating with hundreds of women, children and men who will run/walk to stand against Gender-Based Violence in South Africa.

Who benefits from funds raised?

This year, we are dedicating every kilometre covered during the month to one of the 3,914 women murdered between April 2022 and March 2023.

All proceeds will be donated to Women For Change, a non-profit organization that supports victims of GBVF. WFC  assists victims and families daily with resources such as medical assistance, legal assistance, counsellors and many more.

Through the Women For Change campaign, we hope to keep the conversation going and create a platform where women can unite for change and educate each other.

I believe we need to stand united to put an end to violence against women and children. We will fight for our freedom, and we won’t stop until there’s no woman out there saying #MeToo anymore.
