Why You Should Be Watching Jujutsu Kaisen

041Animation columnist Faziela Harris-Davids shares her latest anime obsession and explains why she thinks anime lovers not watching Jujutse Kaisen are missing out.

IF you are on AnimeTok as much as I am, you will have come across a white haired character with the most brilliant blue eyes. Sporting his familiar black outfit, sometimes with a white mask covering his eyes, he is hard to miss. Satoru Gojo is sassy, sarcastic, handsome, and will leave you quaking at the knees with his most famous line: “Don’t Worry, I’m The Strongest.”

Jujutsu Kaisen is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami. Originally the manga was published in 2018, with a total of 24 volumes being released thus far. Making for an amazing read as those who have read the manga, keep releasing spoilers to those who are only watching the anime. (don’t be that guy)

After an amazing reception in manga sales, it was ranked as one of the Top 20 adult graphic novels by retailers and is seen as the most recommended by comic book employees.

Produced by MAPPA and directed by Sunghoo Park, the anime adaptation is a phenomenal hit globally, with voice actors fitting each character perfectly (both in Japanese and English dubbed).

The story follows Yuji Itadori, an unnaturally gifted fit character as he meets with his Occult Club before visiting his grandfather in hospital. On his deathbed, his grandfather leaves him with a powerful message, to always help others and die surrounded by people. Yuji takes this message to heart, and uses this to save his classmates and a Jujutsu sorcerer Megumi Fushiguro, by swallowing a cursed finger that belongs to a powerful host named Ryomen Sukuna.

In a shocking twist, Yuji is able to control Sukuna within his body, and even though he is meant to be killed (as he is now considered cursed), Megumi’s teacher, Satoru Gojo, argues that Yuji can be trained at the Jujutsu High School under himself, until such time that he can consume all of Sukunas fingers and then they would be able to obliterate the curse (and Yuji) completely.

The host of characters we meet are colorful and amazing in this dark fantasy adventure type manga. With an amazing music score, an outstanding intro that changes as the series progresses, what is there not to love.

I especially love the short clips called Juju Strolls at the end of the episodes in season 1, and with episode 13 of Season 2 being released yesterday on Crunchyroll (there are 23 episodes this season) I cannot wait to find out more!

Which begs the question: You crying?
