When Mgidi Becomes a Community Moment Across the Eastern Cape

This December, a few Eastern Cape families found themselves supported in a way that felt less like a Vodacom campaign and more like a collective act of care.

Across the province, stories of Mgidi, a deeply significant cultural celebration centred on family, gratitude and coming together, were shared on truFM. Families spoke honestly about why the moment mattered, what it meant to their households, and the challenges of celebrating during a tough economic season.

Listeners heard those stories and responded.

Through votes from the community, three families were selected to receive R20 000 each, helping them prepare for their Mgidi celebrations. The support formed part of Vodacom Eastern Cape’s Extra Your Summer initiative, but the heart of the process remained firmly with the people telling the stories and the people listening.

In a time when many households are under financial strain, the support offered breathing room rather than spectacle. It allowed families to focus on the meaning of the day rather than the cost of it.

“We know families are stretched,” said Tshego Malinga, Executive Head: Consumer Business at Vodacom Eastern Cape. “Being able to support moments that carry deep cultural meaning, especially when the community itself leads the process, is something we’re proud to be part of.”

What made the Mgidi journey stand out was how little was decided behind closed doors. Families shared their reasons publicly, listeners made the final call, and Vodacom, working alongside truFM, responded to the collective voice.

The final handover took place on 17 December, on the Mgidi day of the last winning family, marking the close of a journey shaped less by branding and more by shared understanding.

In the Eastern Cape, culture is carried through people, stories and showing up for one another. This time, that support came with a little extra help and a reminder that community-led moments still matter.
