Varsity College Helps Out Young Girls This Women’s Month

STUDENTS and staff of The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay and staff from Heatherbank Primary School celebrated the campus’ recent donation of gently worn bras and sanitary pads to the primary school.

The campus’ School of Education, in collaboration with its VC Cares (student volunteer body) Committee, gathered the items with the help of students, staff and lecturers over a period of three months.

Heatherbank Primary School was chosen after a Varsity College student worked there for Teaching Experience in her 2nd Year of BEd

“She saw a need and it piqued her interest. She then pitched the idea to our Student Wellness Manager who agreed to assist with raising awareness,” said Varsity College PR & Events Co-ordinator Kelly Alexander

With the support of the VC Cares Committee (student volunteer body), they put up stands with banners in the foyer and ran the campaign for a couple of months. The aim was to raise awareness of breast cancer and health in general with a greater aim of women supporting women.

“As a woman, I feel most confident when I am comfortable and supported. Due to the gracious donations by The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay, our young girls will feel confident with themselves and their bodies which will encourage them to become more involved in sporting activities and Physical Education throughout their school day,” said Heatherbank Primary School educator Mishale Futcher.

They hope to continue the drive as the learners progress through the grades.

The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay has a number of initiatives which the institution is directly involved with.

“Currently, Papenkuil Primary School in Gelvandale has been a beneficiary of ours for the past year and a half. With them we have donated, sports equipment, stationery, books, desks, a newly revamped classroom, snacks/meals and most recently a mobile library. Since the beginning of this year, we have actively donated to annual campaigns such as the Cancer Sprayathon/Shavathon, The Animal Anti-Cruelty League, the SANBS and the fight against GBV. With our Ladies to Legends event taking place tomorrow night, we have asked the students to bring a pack of sanitary towels as their entry fee. These will be donated to the young girls of Soutpan Primary School. The sanitary towel drive is something we constantly have going on throughout each year as there is a great need for it,” said Alexander.
