Two Arcadia Students Win Big in Boardwalk’s Trolley Dash

Boardwalk Hotel and Casino Gives Back to Students in Need

Two top-performing students from Arcadia Secondary School had the shopping spree of a lifetime, thanks to Boardwalk Hotel and Casino’s generous Trolley Dash initiative.

Head Girl Lyndle de Wee and Head Boy Octavian Scharneck each had the chance to fill a trolley with over R3,000 worth of essentials at Checkers Boardwalk Mall—picking up much-needed items such as stationery, toiletries, and groceries.

Students Who Lead by Example

The deserving learners were selected following a motivation from Principal Jacqui Cloete, who praised their leadership, academic excellence, and dedication to their school community.

“Lyndle has been our top achiever each term since she arrived in 2022, and Octavian has consistently ranked in the top 10 academically since Grade 8,” said Cloete.

But their achievements go beyond academics.

Lyndle de Wee: A Story of Resilience

Lyndle’s journey has been anything but easy. In 2021, financial hardship forced her to take a year off school while her older sister, Lenesia, found temporary work to support their family. Today, all three sisters—Lyndle, Lenesia, and Levi—are completing matric together, with Lenesia serving as Deputy Head Girl and Levi as a Prefect.

Despite these challenges, Lyndle remains deeply involved in her community, volunteering at a local church soup kitchen to help others in need.

Octavian Scharneck: Overcoming Obstacles with Determination

Raised by his grandparents, Octavian understands the sacrifices made to support his education. With both guardians relying on pension grants, he sometimes has to stay overnight at school when he can’t afford taxi fare home.

Yet, he continues to shine—leading Arcadia’s darts team to success as captain and initiating a reading programme to help struggling learners.

A Well-Deserved Win

Principal Cloete says the Trolley Dash prize will make a big difference for both students.

“Lyndle can now share her stationery and essentials with her siblings and cousins, while Octavian’s win will ease the financial burden on his grandparents and allow him to expand his reading programme.”

Boardwalk General Manager Tati Tsunke emphasized the importance of supporting students in need:

“We often take for granted how access to basic necessities allows learners to fully participate in school. Economic hardship should never stand in the way of academic success, and we are delighted to have helped. We wish Lyndle and Octavian every success in their final school year.”

Through initiatives like these, Boardwalk Hotel and Casino is changing lives—one Trolley Dash at a time.
