Satirical Local Miniseries, Wanderlost, Launches This Week

COMEDY lovers are in for a treat as a new South African mini-series, Wanderlost, takes a satirical look at social media influencers and the relaxed beach-loving lifestyle Nelson Mandela Bay residents can certainly relate to.

Wanderlost, the 6 5-minute episode web series created by French filmmaker Marine George and filmed in Cape Town, was released on Amazon Prime this week.

This satirical comedy follows the adventures of Jessa J, an eccentric French wannabe travel influencer, and Leku, a laid-back South African surfer. The two friends reunite after years apart and their changes in personality – especially Jessa J’s obnoxious narcissism –jeopardize their friendship. Moreover, the story takes place in racially and culturally-charged South Africa while Jessa is not always aware of her own unawareness…can their friendship survive?

An acidic comedy about the hidden part of the nomadic and digital nomad lifestyle (the first ever series on this topic!), Wanderlost questions travellers’ fake woke culture and explores the intricacies of modern female friendships in innovative ways. Inspired by Girls, Broad City or Sacha Baron Cohen’s work, the series aims to make audiences laugh while questioning their habits and pushing towards more inclusivity.

The producer, writer and star Marine George is a French filmmaker with a degree in Economics from Ecole Normale Superieure Paris Saclay and La Sorbonne University and degrees in acting from UCLA and the Taylor Acting Studio. She spent 18 months in South Africa, among which a year at the University of Cape Town, where she fell in love with this country. In her eyes, this series is not only a fun show but also a tribute to South Africa and what this country has taught her. The entire soundtrack comes from South African artists, mainly Yum Yuck, Nalu and Skai Lounge aka Lu Makoboka, who also stars in the series as Sanda.

Leku Dube Rudling is a South African actress and businesswoman, and the mother of two beautiful twins. Her character Leku is named after her thanks for the inspiration she provided to the writer as the two met on set in the play Othello: A Woman’s Story.
