011focus. Thousands of women and men participated in the Totalsports Women’s Race on Sunday, 17 August, celebrating and supporting womanhood. The race took place at Marks Park, Emmarentia, in Johannesburg, following the Cape Town TWR held on 9 August.
Totalsports has supported South African women runners since 2001, and has been expanding annually. What began as a modest initiative has evolved into one of the country’s most significant women’s sporting events. The race kit includes a branded pink t-shirt, fitting for a crowd of over 30,000 participants. Pink embodies womanhood, not merely as a feminine cliche, but it represents boldness, confidence, and beauty. Crossing that finish line also symbolised more than completing a race, the supportive atmosphere was enough to bring to mind one’s successes and triumphs that felt like running through a finish line.
This race achieved remarkable success because running transcends the physical, serving as a powerful metaphor for the different roles women play in society. Women run households, they run companies, and they run the streets – literally. What better way to honour them than providing a platform to run freely together? Like any other sport, running demands practice, patience, and consistency. These are qualities that these women have cultivated and demonstrated proudly on race day.
With the emergence of running clubs and events, physical activity has proven to be more than just about fitness, it creates safe social spaces for women. Beyond running, Pilates classes and padel clubs have gained popularity in Johannesburg. This shift toward healthier, safer, and more productive social spaces deserves recognition, as does women uniting in activities that uplift and strengthen. These environments foster meaningful connections, build lasting friendships, and provide havens where participants can pursue personal growth without judgment or intimidation.
