The much-anticipated Nelson Mandela Bay Dance Festival (NMBDF), formerly known as the PE Dance Festival, is set to dazzle audiences at the Savoy Theatre from 26 – 31 August.
Established 43 years ago by Jennifer Abraham and Hermione Ballinger, this celebration of dance promises an unforgettable experience thanks to the exceptional dedication and expertise of the organizing committee.
A Rich Legacy of Dance Excellence
The NMBDF committee, comprising seasoned professionals and passionate dance enthusiasts, has meticulously curated a festival showcasing a diverse range of dance styles from 20 dance studios in the Eastern and Southern Cape. From classical ballet to hip hop, traditional performances to cutting-edge modern choreography, the festival offers something for every dance lover.
Nici Lovemore, Chair of the NMBDF committee, emphasized, “Our committee’s collective qualified experience and unwavering commitment is the backbone of this festival.” Susan Zerbst, representing ballet, shared that her studio has been involved in the festival for 38 years. As a former NMBDF dancer herself, Zerbst highlights the importance of stage experience and receiving constructive feedback from internationally esteemed adjudicators. “The festival provides a platform for dancers to perform, whether they aspire to a professional career or dance purely for the love of it,” she added.
Memories and Milestones
Lauren McCarthy, who shares the hip-hop role with Leanka Laubscher, reflected on her long-standing connection with the festival. “I participated in this festival as a 4-year-old girl, and as both a dancer and teacher, I have made the most wonderful memories and met amazing people.” McCarthy met her studio partner, Heidi Sampson, while waiting to perform solos at the festival as children. Sampson, representing Tap on the committee, is thrilled that her youngest daughter will be participating in her first NMBDF this year, calling it a “full circle moment.”
Carmen de Sousa from Knysna represents the national category and applauds the support she has received from other teachers during the festival. Candice Johnstone, representing modern/contemporary, recalled her first memorable experience under the spotlights on the historic Opera House stage. “Festival plays a huge role in developing local talent and exposing my studio to other dancers and genres,” said Johnstone. “It introduces them to a professional environment and allows them to be part of it.”
Record-Breaking Participation
This year, the NMB Dance Festival has a record-breaking 661 individual entrants who will perform over 1634 dance routines during the festival. The 10-day celebration of dance will culminate in a gala event showcasing performance highlights and the Awards Presentation on Saturday, 31 August.
