Nelson Mandela Bay Allocates R16.4 Million to Strengthen Crime-Fighting Efforts

In a bold response to the escalating crime rates within the Metro, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has committed R16.4 million from its operating budget to reinforce crime-fighting initiatives.

This significant investment highlights the Municipality’s unwavering dedication to the safety and security of its residents.

The announcement was made by Councillor Bulelwa Mafaya, Mayoral Committee Member for Budget and Treasury, during a full Council sitting on 3 September 2024. “As the Budget and Treasury Directorate, we are responding to the call for an all-hands-on-deck approach in the fight against crime. The lack of resources has been a major impediment to our efforts. This funding will make a substantial difference,” stated MMC Mafaya.

This financial commitment comes on the heels of a recent visit by Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, who conducted crime awareness public participation meetings in identified hotspot areas. The Minister also revealed the deployment of specialized police units to Nelson Mandela Bay, with operations set to begin immediately.

Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Police Commissioner, Andrew Moses, outlined the Metro’s strategic crime prevention plan. “We are moving towards a smart plan of dealing with crime, in collaboration with the South African Police Services and other law enforcement stakeholders. Our plan includes using CCTV cameras, shot spotter technology, mobile surveillance vehicles, and increased visibility in hotspot areas,” said Commissioner Moses. “We are encouraged by the budget commitment. These funds will significantly enhance our efforts to make Nelson Mandela Bay safe again.”

Further details were provided by Acting City Manager, Mandla George, who briefed the Council on plans to reactivate CCTV cameras. “An assessment has already been made to check the condition of the existing cameras, and they are still in working order. We are now busy with the supply chain processes, so we are appointing a company to manage the system,” said Acting City Manager George.

This comprehensive approach, backed by a substantial budget allocation, underscores the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s dedication to creating a safer environment for all its residents.
