A new developmental pageant is hoping to redefine what it means to wear a crown while creating meaningful opportunities for young women across Nelson Mandela Bay.
Miss GQ Township 2026 has officially launched, inviting young women between the ages of 18 and 25 from Gqeberha, Kariega and the Northern Areas to enter a programme focused on leadership, mentorship and community development rather than traditional beauty pageantry.
Organisers say the initiative aims to identify young women already making a positive impact in their communities while equipping them with the confidence, skills and support needed to become future leaders.
More than a beauty pageant
Unlike conventional pageants, Miss GQ Township places personal growth at the heart of the competition. Contestants will take part in a developmental journey that includes leadership training, mentorship, confidence building, public speaking, personal branding, networking opportunities and community engagement.
Organiser and programme director Busisiwe Nxele said the programme was created to help young women realise that their backgrounds should never limit their ambitions.
“We believe that where a young woman comes from should never determine how far she can go.”
She added that the pageant is about developing women of purpose, character and leadership who proudly represent the communities that raised them while inspiring the next generation to dream bigger.
Reviving community pride
Organisers believe township pageants once played an important role in building community pride by creating role models who inspired younger generations.
Miss GQ Township hopes to revive that spirit while addressing some of the challenges facing many young women today, including limited opportunities, unemployment and a lack of mentorship.
The programme will conclude with the Miss GQ Township 2026 Gala Crowning Ceremony, where one contestant will be crowned the inaugural Miss GQ Township.
The winner will spend a Legacy Year serving as the face of the programme, representing the organisation at public engagements, supporting community initiatives and encouraging young women throughout Gqeberha, Kariega and surrounding areas.
