Three organisations working on the frontlines of cancer care in the Eastern Cape and Garden Route will be the official beneficiaries of the 2025 Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer, presented by ISUZU MOTORS South Africa.
Announced this week, the selected beneficiaries are:
- Siyavuka for Kids,
- Reach for Recovery, and
- Project Flamingo.
These nonprofits were chosen for their wide-ranging and hands-on support to those navigating the realities of cancer, from children undergoing chemotherapy to women recovering from breast surgery and patients waiting for urgent, life-saving interventions in the public healthcare system.
“It is moving to see the depth and extent of support for those affected by cancer in the Eastern Cape,” says Algoa FM marketing manager Lesley Geyer. “Each of the selected organisations reflects a strong commitment to care, dignity, and hope, exactly what the Big Walk is all about.”
Focus on Paediatric Cancer Care
As the main beneficiary, Siyavuka for Kids will receive significant support for its work with the PE Provincial Hospital’s Paediatric Oncology and Haematology Unit.
“As a centre of excellence for children with cancer and other haematological illnesses, we serve many young patients from marginalised communities who rely on state care,” says Dr Johanni Vermeulen, Clinical Head of the M3 Unit and Chairperson of Siyavuka for Kids.
“The Big Walk’s contribution could help us fund essential items like specialised anti-nausea medication or proper cleaning equipment, things that directly impact our children’s health and dignity.”
Reach for Recovery: Support After Surgery
Reach for Recovery, a national organisation with deep Eastern Cape roots, focuses on helping women who’ve undergone breast surgery.
“Every stride you make helps us connect, comfort, and uplift women navigating their toughest journeys,” says Stephné Jacobs, chairperson and breast cancer survivor.
“This is more than a walk,it’s a movement of heart. Your presence sends a powerful message of solidarity, strength, and shared hope.”
Project Flamingo: Closing the Public Healthcare Gap
Rounding out the beneficiary list is Project Flamingo, known for its surgical catch-up programmes, emotional support, and diagnostic services.
“Support from the Big Walk will directly empower us to restore dignity to patients across the province,” says Dr Liana Roodt, CEO of Project Flamingo.
“We’re working toward better infrastructure and shorter waiting times for women in the public system, this funding helps bring that goal closer.”
