This past weekend I took the kids on a small outing to SANCCOB in Cape Recief, a rehabilitation centre for sea birds. This non-profit organisation provides 24/7 rescue for sick and injured sea birds as well as abandoned seabird chicks. SANCCOB also responds to oil spill disasters along the South African coastline. They treat an average of 2500 injured, sick and oiled birds annually.Â
I know as a child I absorbed so much information through visualisation and I still do. Taking the kids on a beautiful day to this centre is rewarding because they provide engaging lessons about the state of climate change and pollution and how they affect South Africa’s sea life. It’s very eye-opening to say the least and it gives you a different perspective of life surrounding you.Â
Overall, I had a great tour and I wish we saw so much more but it was a quiet Saturday and I’m sure the best time to see how the staff works with the penguins and maintaining their health is during the week. The entrance fee for adults is R45 and R30 for pensioners. Children under the age of 12 are free.Â
Giving back and showing kindness is something that’s really important to me and I also encourage you to take some time in your life to give back and be a blessing in someone else’s life. If you’re interested in donating supplies or volunteering at the SANCCOB centre, we have the forms ready to be downloaded and once you’ve completed them, please send them to this email: calista@sanccob.co.za. To know more information about the centre, please visit their website: https://sanccob.co.za.
I’d love to know about your experience at SANCCOB and other cool places you’ve visited that would interest our animal lovers, send us an inbox and we’ll check it out!Â
