In a historic move, the Kouga Local Municipality Council has approved the largest single-project budget in its history, allocating a R200 million external loan from the Development Bank of South Africa (DBSA) to rehabilitate the region’s road infrastructure. This momentous decision, passed during a Special Council Meeting on Friday, 17 January 2025, is set to address the long-standing challenges of deteriorating roads in the area.
The resolution builds on an earlier decision made on 27 October 2023 to secure the critical funding, marking a significant turning point in Kouga’s road maintenance strategy.
Road Resealing Project to Kick Off
The municipality is set to officially launch the much-anticipated Road Resealing Project on Thursday, 23 January 2025, at the corner of Hoffman and Jacob Streets in Humansdorp. During this launch event, more details about the project’s scope and the anticipated benefits for residents will be shared.
The project aims to address years of neglect and the urgent need for road repairs across the region. The municipality inherited a R500 million road maintenance backlog in August 2016, and this problem has been exacerbated by heavy rainfall. With this new loan approval, the region is poised to make significant strides in restoring its roads to a safe and acceptable standard.
A Step Toward Economic Vitality
Executive Mayor Hattingh Bornman emphasized the importance of this initiative for the community. “The approval of this loan is a decisive step towards addressing our long-standing infrastructure challenges. This initiative will not only improve road safety but also contribute to the economic vitality of our region,” Bornman said.
With the potential to transform Kouga’s road network, this project is seen as a vital investment in both the safety and future growth of the region. As work progresses, residents can look forward to smoother, safer roads that will facilitate better mobility and support local businesses.
Stay tuned for further updates on the Road Resealing Project as it unfolds.
