IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay shares some of their latest achievements from hosting the regional National High Schools Quiz competition to forming part of a successful water safety campaign.

National High Schools Quiz

(f.l.t.r): Ivan van Staden (Gr 9 Nico Malan High School), Earlene Jacobs (Head Student Experience The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay) and Uviwe Ntsali (Gr 10 Morningside High School)

Ivan and Uviwe respectively came first and second in the regional round of the National High Schools’ Quiz hosted on campus by The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay.

They will compete, in the national grand finale on 14 October at The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall, against Gr 9-11 learners from around the country for the R10 000 cash prize. The last two years of this particular competition saw the winners emanating from the Eastern Cape – Nico Malan High School.

“It’ll be my first time visiting Johannesburg and only my second time flying so I’m very excited to compete against the best and sharpest quiz students in South Africa. It’s also a great opportunity to measure my intelligence against the best in the country. I am privileged to be representing the Eastern Cape as well as my school. I’m looking forward to making it a hat-trick of wins,” said Van Staden.

Social Action Project

(f.l.t.r): Gordan Potgieter (Facilitator DHL Lifesaving South Africa), Kaylum Assam (4th year IIE Bachelor of Education), Anelka Jacobs (4th year IIE Bachelor of Education) and Fernando Cain (Facilitator and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Beach Office Manager) hosted a successful water safety campaign for the Rowallan Park Primary School learners.

Assam and Jacobs donated the water tank as well as books on water safety.

The Social Action Project forms part of the 4th year IIE Bachelor of Education students’ Teaching Experience Portfolio and Assam and Jacobs created awareness, educated and united the learners and teachers through DHL Lifesaving South Africa’s Watersmart Education Programme on water safety.

“We underestimate the importance of water safety and don’t do nearly enough of it with the children. The knowledge of swimming and water safety can reduce the risk of drownings and provide them with the necessary skills to one day save a life,” said Assam.
