For many South African children, getting to school means walking long distances – often barefoot or in shoes that are falling apart. You can help change that.
MyWalk, a local non-profit, turns uncontaminated medical waste such as PVC drip bags and oxygen masks into durable, waterproof, and fully recyclable school shoes. Since 2019, the organisation has provided more than 300,000 pairs of shoes to learners who need them most.
Now, with support from Epson South Africa, the initiative is expanding its reach. During Epson’s Global Volunteer Day, the company partnered with MyWalk to deliver 122 pairs of school shoes to learners at Mayfield Primary School in Daveyton, Benoni, a school situated near a wetland where many children arrive with damaged footwear, especially in the rainy season.
“Many of our children walk long distances to get here, often across muddy and uneven ground,” says Principal Lewatle Maroga. “Durable school shoes not only protect their feet but also boost their confidence and allow them to fully immerse themselves in school life.”
The impact of a single pair of shoes is immense: it helps learners walk safely, arrive ready to learn, and feel a sense of dignity and belonging.
“Each pair of recycled shoes represents a step toward a more equal and sustainable future,” says Gareth Jay, Regional Sales Director for Epson Africa. “Our partnership with MyWalk shows how sustainability can support both people and the planet.”
Get Involved
MyWalk continues to rely on public support to keep children protected and in class. Here’s how you can make a difference:
- Donate: A contribution of R150 funds a new pair of recyclable school shoes.
- Partner: Businesses can sponsor bulk shoe drives or join sustainability campaigns.
- Recycle: Medical and manufacturing facilities can register to donate clean PVC waste for conversion into shoes.
