Help Keep Gqeberha Clean and Race-Ready for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY 10K

It’s almost time for Gqeberha to lace up and shine. But before runners hit the road for the 3rd annual Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K, locals are invited to grab gloves and get involved in a meaningful city-wide mission—the Gqeberha Inner-City Clean-Up.

Taking place on Saturday, 12 April 2025, from 08:30 to 10:00, this vibrant initiative begins at the Absa Branch on Govan Mbeki Avenue (Port Elizabeth Central). Whether you’re a regular jogger, a proud resident, or simply love your city, this is your chance to contribute to a cleaner, greener Gqeberha.

“The Inner-City Clean-Up is an opportunity to contribute to a cleaner city while fostering a strong sense of community pride,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Series Founder.

Hosted by the team behind the Absa RUN YOUR CITY SERIES, the clean-up is more than a pre-race warm-up—it’s a celebration of community spirit. Volunteers will receive refuse bags and gloves, and all collected waste will be responsibly disposed of. As a token of appreciation, Absa will provide breakfast packs and beverages for all who take part.

Sustainability in Action

This initiative also supports the series’ Single Use Plastic (SUP) Management Campaign, aiming to reduce single-use plastic by 85% across all five city races. With designated litter zones and the #ICarryMyOwn initiative that encourages reusable water bottles, the event is leading by example in creating a more sustainable running culture.

“We believe that by working together, we can create lasting impact,” says Jabulile Nsibanyoni, Absa’s Head of Sponsorships. “This campaign goes beyond cleaning—it’s about building a healthier, cleaner, and more vibrant Gqeberha.”

Race Day Excitement

The clean-up sets the tone for race day on Sunday, 13 April 2025, when thousands will gather on Beach Road in Humewood for the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K, which starts at 07:00. Open to elite athletes and casual runners alike, the event promises a high-energy morning filled with fitness, celebration, and city pride.

The series proudly supports the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), a non-profit that has led the fight against cancer since 1931. Entrants can show their support by donating to CANSA when signing up for the event online.
