Discover Stephané Conradie’s Unique Art At Bird Street Gallery

The Standard Bank Young Artist (SBYA) award winner Stephané Conradie will show her work and conduct an art walkabout this weekend, 19 to 20 July in Gqeberha.

Nelson Mandela University Bird Street Gallery will exhibit Stephané Conradie’s bricolage assemblages from 19 July to 8 August 2024. Winner of the SBYA Visual Art category, Conradie will present “Wegwysers deur die Blinkuur” (“Wayfinders through the Twilight Hour”). The exhibition opens on 19 July at 5:30 pm and is open weekdays from 9:00 to 16:00.

Join Conradie for a walk-through on 20 July, 10:30-11:30. “It’s a beautiful exhibition that creates an intriguing dialogue with our re-contextualised colonial-era building,” says curator Jonathan van der Walt. Conradie’s work explores identity formations linked to South Africa’s colonial and apartheid histories.

Namibian-born Conradie, 32, a lecturer at UCT’s Michaelis School of Fine Art, reshapes home décor into new art, inspired by lower and working-class homes. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is part of several gallery collections.

Presented by the University’s Visual Arts Department, Standard Bank, and the National Arts Festival, the exhibition is at 20 Bird Street in Central. The SBYA awards honour young South African artists who shape the nation’s creative economy and art history.
