Kariega came alive with joy as Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Cllr. Babalwa Lobishe, officially unveiled the newly refurbished Cuyler Bridge on 10 December 2024. After being severely damaged by devastating floods, the bridge has been restored to its former glory, symbolizing hope and resilience for the community.
With a budget of R3.8 million, the refurbishment of this vital piece of infrastructure is more than just a structural achievement—it’s an early Christmas gift for Kariega residents. The revitalized bridge promises to reconnect communities, boost local economic activity, and enhance transportation networks, signaling the successful completion of phase one of a broader recovery initiative.
Rebuilding Momentum: Phase Two Underway
The restoration of the Cuyler Bridge is only the beginning. Phase two is already in progress, focusing on improving water management systems. This includes clearing riverbanks to restore natural flow and cleaning the canal and drainage systems to mitigate future flood risks.
“We are thrilled to announce the successful completion of this project. The closure of the bridge negatively impacted the local economic zone, and we couldn’t allow businesses to suffer further. As part of my 100-day priorities, we are driving impactful, agile, and quality infrastructure development to boost Kariega’s growth,” said Executive Mayor Lobishe.
Progress Across Kariega
Under the Mayor’s “All Hands-on Deck” initiative, Kariega’s recovery is accelerating. Several key projects, valued at approximately R6.2 million, are underway, including the rebuilding of the Jubilee Canal and Gibbon Bridge.
Efforts are exceeding expectations, with the Matanzima Bridge—initially projected for completion in 24 months—now set to finish in under 10 months. Acting Director of Project Management, Sisanda Njanjula, shared, “We are racing to complete all projects before the festive season begins. Safety remains a priority, especially for children near the canal, so contractors are working diligently, even on weekends.”
Community Celebrates a New Chapter
Residents celebrated the bridge’s reopening with excitement and gratitude. “We extend our heartfelt thanks to the municipality, especially our Executive Mayor, Cllr. Lobishe, for prioritizing Kariega’s development. Seeing our roads open means we can truly enjoy the festive season,” said community member Belinda Snam.
A Call to Action
As Kariega rebuilds, Mayor Lobishe urged residents to help preserve the area by avoiding littering in rivers, stormwater drains, and canals. Illegal dumping exacerbates flooding risks, making community cooperation essential for lasting change.
With projects progressing ahead of schedule, Kariega’s future looks brighter than ever—a testament to resilience, collaboration, and commitment to rebuilding stronger.
