With equal parts humour, heartbreak and raw honesty, Gqeberha-based comedian Chantal Harris is set to make her National Arts Festival debut with ADHD, the Bottle and Me, a solo show that tackles addiction, impulsivity and self-discovery with fearless candour.
Directed by acclaimed actor and playwright Sophie Joans, ADHD, the Bottle and Me is anything but your average stand-up set. The production dives deep into Harris’s personal journey through alcohol addiction and a late ADHD diagnosis, balancing irreverent humour with vulnerable truth-telling.
“It’s a little bit funny, a little bit sad, and maybe even a little bit helpful,” Harris says of the show, which recounts the moment she checked into rehab—Bloody Mary in hand—back in March 2008, and the years of chaotic clarity that followed.
Now sixteen years sober and a rising voice on the Gqeberha comedy scene, Harris brings an unfiltered, deeply human perspective to the stage—one that audiences might find as healing as it is hilarious.
Director Sophie Joans, known for her sharp eye and absurdist flair, says she was drawn to Harris’s unique voice and candid storytelling. “Chantal’s writing is witty and endearing, filled with delightful twists in a powerful story. Her performance is hilarious. I’m honoured to be part of this project.”
Whether you’ve faced addiction, lived with ADHD, or simply appreciate the power of personal storytelling, ADHD, the Bottle and Me offers something rare: a comedy show that also cuts deep.
