NEW to the Gqeberha and ready to make us laugh, comedian Brendon Roux hosts an Intimate Night of Laughter and Wine this weekend as a debut in his new home city.
“I’ve recently graduated and wanted to see if the phrase “change is as good as a holiday” rings true so off I came to the friendly city, only been a few months but it’s certainly growing on me,” said Roux who is originally from Cape Town.
Roux is known for his razor-sharp wit and captivating storytelling and is set to bring
his unique blend of observational humour, and witty anecdotes, to the stage.
“I’m not one for a quick punch line, I’ve adapted a storytelling comedic style where I aim to be as personal as possible, often revealing far too much about myself, but honesty has great power. When describing what I do I always say I identify as the love child of Chelsea Handler and Nataniel. I should also mention that amidst all the tales of failed love, raunchy escapades, work-life trials and triumphs and witty observations about life, I allow moments of seriousness to wear my heart on my sleeve and touch on my journey of self-love/acceptance, the importance of a chosen family and the darker side of occupying space as a fabulous fem queer human in this country I call home.”
Roux has been performing comedy for a year.
“ I’ve always had a knack for humour and finally accepted the dare to attempt to stand up at the launch of a different project I was working on, took the mic for what felt like 5 mins, was intact 25 and so my love affair with comedy started.
“I was shocked to find out that it’s only been a year, so much has happened so quickly. I did a baby show, then an open mic, 3 weeks later my first full-hour show started a month run at Beefcakes Cape Town and the rest is history and history yet to be made,” said Roux
When not on stage, Roux is a lifestyle journalist.
“I fill my days writing in coffee shops, running my latest venture, @whatsoninpe, and filming content for various platforms. When it’s time to wind down you will always find me in the kitchen blasting Adele or Celine, the kitchen is my therapy. And most importantly I always make time to sit around a table to break bread and connect with friends and family, that’s truly my happy place,” said the vivacious performer.
The comedian’s words are not the only thing that draws attention.
“On and off stage I’m no stranger to rocking stilettos, kaftans, mini skirts and all things fashion fabulous it certainly runs heads and often evokes some negative reactions but I’m grateful that I learned very early on that life is far too short to care about what others think of you so whatever makes you smile, do that !!! I’ve got a tattoo on my arm that reads a RuPaul quote ‘All born naked and the rest is drag’ We are all doing our own form of drag, even Gertjie in his khaki shorts and two-tone shorts, what we wear is what we want to tell the world about ourselves and my femininity is one of my greatest strengths.”
Roux does not believe in taking life too seriously; “You’ve got to love yourself in order to start loving others and loving life, Just be kind and be lekker, And no matter how different you are, there is space in this world for you to shine your light, if there is not a seat at the table for you, it’s not your table, no one tells you this but you can in fact be audacious enough to start your own table, it’s so worth it.”
Those attending Roux’s debut show will have the opportunity to intimately connect with this vibrant entertainer and experience his comedy up close and personal. Prepare for an evening that will not only entertain but also inspire as Roux weaves together laughter, stories, and a celebration of the human spirit.
