041Sports writer Sihle Ndalwentle Sonto takes a closer look at City Lads FC’s impressive start to the season as Head Coach Unathi “Chees” Madzimure reflects on the team’s performance and their ambitions for the future.
City Lads FC Head Coach Unathi Chees Madzimure has expressed satisfaction with his team’s strong start to the season, as they currently sit 5th on the league table with 3 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss. In a recent interview, Coach Madzimure shared his thoughts on the team’s performance, the competitive nature of the league, individual standout performances, and the team’s goals moving forward.
A Strong Start to the Season
Reflecting on the team’s current position, Madzimure admitted he was not surprised by their early success. “Honestly, I’m not surprised with the start of the team because playing in that Under 18 tournament, I think we benefited a lot going into the new season. But I’m happy with the start of the team so far,” said Madzimure.
Despite a strong opening, City Lads have had their fair share of challenges, including a loss in one of their early fixtures. The coach explained that the defeat was largely due to the difficult playing conditions, particularly strong winds. “That was a crazy game that was dominated by wind, but as a team, I will be honest, we didn’t plan well for it,” Madzimure admitted, noting that the team is focused on learning from the experience.
A More Flexible and Energetic Team
Tactically, the coach is pleased with the team’s improvement, particularly in their flexibility and energy levels. “We have improved a lot tactically, and now we have a lot of flexibility in our play. We play with a lot of energy, especially with the addition of young players,” he explained. This dynamic approach has been evident in the team’s performances and has contributed to their positive start to the season.
Standout Performances
Madzimure singled out two players for their standout performances so far. “As I answer this question, I have a smile on my face. It’s Isenathi, a 15-year-old boy. He’s been key in our last 4 unbeaten games, not forgetting Lutho, who scored 4 goals in 2 games the previous week,” said Madzimure. The coach’s praise for these young talents highlights their importance to the team’s success this season.
Looking Ahead: A Competitive League
City Lads currently sit 5th in the standings out of 16 teams, and Madzimure is fully aware of the competitive nature of the league. He also noted that for City Lads, finishing in the top 8 would be a significant achievement, as they’ve struggled to break into this elite group in previous seasons. “As a club, we have been finishing outside the top 8, so achieving top 8 will be like a trophy for us. I feel like clubs like City, Callies, and now I think Dodgers are showing good signs to push those top positions,” he said. Madzimure believes this season offers a real opportunity for City Lads to solidify their place among the league’s best.
The Importance of Balance
When asked about areas for improvement, the coach emphasized the balance he has in his squad this season. “I think I have a good balance this season for the first time. I have a good mixture of young and experienced players who are always open to help the youngsters,” said Madzimure. He is optimistic that this balanced squad will continue to grow and improve as the season progresses.
A Message for the Fans
Looking ahead to the remainder of the season, Madzimure’s message to City Lads FC supporters was simple: “Just believe in the team and keep supporting us.” With a strong start under their belts and an exciting mix of youth and experience, the future looks promising for City Lads FC.
As the season unfolds, Coach Unathi Chees Madzimure and his team will be looking to build on their current form and aim for a top position. The road ahead will be tough, but with the backing of their fans, City Lads are determined to make this season one to remember.
