Christmas Comes Early as Emithini Settlement Lights Up

The Emithini Informal Settlement in Motherwell marked a milestone on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, as 120 homes were officially connected to the electricity grid by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM). The move brought relief to residents who have struggled for years with illegal and unsafe connections.

NMBM Mayoral Committee Member for Electricity and Energy, Cllr Ziyanda Mnqokoyi, oversaw the electrification, which forms part of a broader initiative to provide safe and legal power to informal settlements across the Metro. The project aims to connect around 700 households in phases.

“This is about more than just electricity,” said Mnqokoyi. “It’s about addressing unsafe connections, managing infrastructure effectively, and ensuring that residents receive the services they are entitled to. We’re also educating communities on the dangers of illegal connections and the importance of protecting public infrastructure.”

Community Relief and Responsibility

For residents like Jongiwe Piko, the electrification means ending years of uncertainty. “It’s a day we’ve been waiting for,” said Piko. “We’ve had to pay for illegal connections, which often caused disputes with the formal housing residents nearby. Now we can focus on working with the Municipality to protect the infrastructure and enjoy a dignified Christmas like other families in the Metro.”

The project also includes installing two transformers in the area. Residents are being urged to safeguard these resources and report any criminal activity. “When transformers are damaged, it’s the community that bears the brunt,” Mnqokoyi said.

Ongoing Efforts

While Tuesday’s milestone was a cause for celebration, Mnqokoyi acknowledged that challenges remain. Budget constraints and a shortage of meters have slowed the rollout, but the Municipality remains committed to completing the project.

“We’ve made a promise to electrify more homes in Emithini, and we will deliver,” she said. “Today’s progress is a step in the right direction.”

The electrification of Emithini marks a significant move toward improved living conditions and safety in Nelson Mandela Bay, signalling a brighter future for its residents.
