A smile shared is a smile doubled, as the saying goes, and this seems to be very true for novelty accessory company Sockit, whose owner found that there was a market for her quirky sense of humour.
High school teacher Chinique Dido’s work at a specialized education school in Gqeberha sees her taking on the serious work of assisting learners with learning barriers but her small business leans into the sillier side of her personality.
The toddler mom makes novelty socks, underwear, and earrings and says it fuels the creative side she inherited from her mom.
“I love to think about cheezy/quirky sayings, knowing that it can put a smile on someone’s face when they read the quote on the socks or undies,” she says.
“It started at the end of 2017, I needed something to keep my mind busy as I was going through some personal stuff. I started making socks with sayings like; If you can read this/Bring me coffee or Im busy marking and so on,” says Dido adding that she was pleasantly surprised to see her business flourish.
“I was putting whatever people wanted on the socks then during the COVID pandemic my business grew a lot with my wedding postponed socks,” she reminisces, saying that her own July 2020 wedding had to be postponed due to the lockdown and associated restrictions.
Her business which supplies accessories, both directly and at the Locally Yours store in Gqeberha and Symara Factory Shop in Despatch is a one-man operation.
“I do all of the printing, design, and making myself. My husband is a big help and support system. When I need something he will jump to assist, then my 2.5-year-old helps me by keeping me on my toes, because when I do the earrings she packs them and moves them around,” says Dido.
