Nearly 20 000 walkers have helped bring hope and comfort to cancer patients across the Eastern Cape after taking part in the 2025 Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer.
The annual fundraiser, presented by Isuzu Motors South Africa, recorded its biggest turnout yet, with proceeds now being used to purchase vital medical equipment and supplies for local cancer support organisations.
From the Garden Route to the Wild Coast and through the Karoo, the impact is already being felt.
Three charities benefit from record turnout
This year’s beneficiaries are Siyavuka for Kids, Project Flamingo, and Reach for Recovery.
Funds raised have enabled the purchase of a wide range of medical devices and equipment designed to improve both treatment and patient comfort.
“The generous donation will make a real and lasting difference in the lives of the children supported by Siyavuka for Kids,” said Yiota Kieck, board member and head of the executive committee.
“The equipment provided will help ensure that vital treatment can be delivered safely and effectively, giving children undergoing cancer and blood disorder care the support they need during one of the most vulnerable times in their lives.”
Supporting public hospitals
According to Project Flamingo chief executive Dr Liana Roodt, the donation strengthens dignified, evidence based care in public healthcare facilities.
“As a cancer NGO that deeply understands the need for equitable, people centred care, we are profoundly grateful to Algoa FM and every participant in the 2025 Big Walk for Cancer,” she said.
The equipment will be used at Livingstone Hospital and George Provincial Hospital, helping improve outcomes for patients across the region.
Restoring dignity for women after breast cancer
Funds are also supporting women who have undergone mastectomies through Reach for Recovery, which provides silicone prostheses and care bags to patients.
“These prostheses not only restore physical balance but also help with emotional healing,” said national manager Stephanie van Deventer.
“Many women feel they lose their sense of femininity after breast cancer. These prostheses help them reclaim their confidence and return to everyday life with dignity.”
Community spirit drives impact
Algoa FM managing director Alfie Jay said the walk continues to show the power of community action.
“The event brings together people from all walks of life united in the fight to support those affected by cancer. It shows what can happen when a region stands together.”
The next Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer presented by Isuzu Motors South Africa will take place on Saturday, 31 October 2026, with walks planned in George, Gqeberha and Komani.
