When Nexgen Training Academy celebrated its 5th graduation ceremony on 31 October 2025, it was more than a celebration of certificates. It was a testament to Adrian Wagener’s vision, the founder and director who has spent over a decade turning community passion into real opportunities for youth in the Eastern Cape.
From Young Achievers to Nexgen
Adrian’s journey began in 2014 with a non-profit called Young Achievers. What started as a drop-in centre for children, school learners, and college students quickly became a hub of mentorship, after-school support, and community development. Through programmes like Youth Against Drug Abuse (YADA), Adrian gained hands-on experience in youth engagement, life skills facilitation, and social development.
“Even though Young Achievers eventually paused, the lessons we learned and the partnerships we built became the foundation for something bigger,” Adrian told 041Online.
By 2020, with COVID-19 creating an urgent need for community health education, Adrian co-founded Nexgen Training Academy. The goal was clear: create a sustainable, accredited institution that equips young people to become Health Promotion Officers and community change-makers.
The People Driving Nexgen
Adrian leads a passionate team that blends vision, expertise, and heart:
- Ellen Fischat, Director and social worker, brings innovation, mentorship, and a commitment to women’s empowerment.
- Ronecha Mafeking, Academic Principal, ensures academic excellence and a learner-centred approach across all programmes.
- Adrian Wagener, Founder and visionary, drives the mission of taking bold chances, creating opportunities, and empowering communities.
“Our work is about more than jobs, it’s about giving young people purpose, confidence, and the tools to make a difference,” Adrian says.
Who Learns at Nexgen?
Nexgen primarily works with youth aged 18–35, including:
- Non-matriculated learners seeking a second chance

- The 95-95-95 HIV/AIDS Campaign
- Adherence Clubs and CCMDD Training

- First Responders Training in partnership with the Rape Crisis Centre Port Elizabeth
Graduates are already making an impact, with some employed through the Social Employment Fund, and others pursuing tertiary studies.

Adrian welcomes applications from youth eager to learn and make a difference. Enrollment details and programme information are available directly through Nexgen Training Academy.
Looking Ahead
The academy will continue its 5-year celebration with a Student & Community Tour, showcasing learners’ projects and community impact.
“Every student represents hope, for themselves, their families, and the communities they serve,” Adrian says. “At Nexgen, we don’t just train people; we build leaders.”
