THIS weekend sees the Savoy Theater stage light up with music and dancing as Movimiento Constante Dance Company presents Sabor Espanol – A Taste of Spain.
The newly formed dance company is dedicating their show to two members, the late Terry Isaacs as well as fellow dancer Mihlali Mankomo who suffered a debilitating accident and is undergoing physical therapy.
“Sabor Espanol is our first official show for our little company and with us being so new our other focus is to make sure we have a quality of dance and entertainment which is stage worthy and show ready. We truly want to bring back Spanish dance to our city and ignite the interests and passion for it whether it be having new dancers wanting to learn the discipline or a bigger audience and more opportunities to perform,” says one of the founding members Shanika Septoo.
She started the company with Bianca Swalwel and Kazzlynne Williams in February this year having met as part of the Fiona Rodel School of Spanish Dance family.
The debut show sees a cast of 14 former Fiona Rodel students from all walks of life and different age groups come together for a love of Spanish dancing.
“We have a little senorita as young as 7 years old and the eldest is 51 years old,” said Septoo.
“The idea is to bring a Taste of Spain to the audience, we are covering a range of rhythms and dance types which fall under the Spanish Dance umbrella. Many associate Flamenco as the tradition with regards to Spanish dancing however there is much more, for example the Jota is a spanish dance that came to be in the 1700s and is the national folk dance of Aragon, Spain. A region in Spain which is completely landlocked and located in the north of Spain.
This traditional dance has a quick timing and there are different forms in other regions. Dancers elevate their legs as if they were doing a fouetté combined with waltz-like movements. In the meantime, they play the castanets with arched elevated arms. One of many dance types which fall under the Spanish dance umbrella and our aim is to bring this to the audience and enlighten while entertaining them with these performances,” she said.
