A Look Into The Work Community Chest Does

THE Community Chest is a non-profit organization that has played a central role in the welfare sector since 1952.

They have become an innovative solutions hub for all donors’ interests. Their donors consist of corporate, foundations, individual investors, trusts and estates and they focus on responsible giving and responsible use of donor funding.

The Community Chest understands corporate social investment and manages private and corporate philanthropy. That means vetting and applying due diligence to the NGOs that they hand-pick to work with, advising donors on which to support and why.

They also monitor and evaluate their services and ultimately conduct impact assessments on behalf of donors to ensure that every Rand spent, makes the difference intended.

Their focus areas are Education, Health, Skills Development and Community Development.

Community Chest Focus Projects

SANITARY THUTHUZELA PROJECT

Women play an integral role in our communities, especially young girls who aspire to achieve great success in the future. For many girls, it is not possible to go to school when they have their periods because they can’t afford sanitary towels. We did a survey amongst the girls at schools in the metro and the result was that each girl is absent from school during her menstruation for an average of 5 days per month – This equates to a whole term (3 months) per year

This creates a huge dent in their education as there are no extra classes offered where they can recoup the loss of work. No girl should miss school because of their menstruation. Our objective is to empower young girls to become more confident within themselves in order to realise their full potential and achieve anything they aspire to.

FEEDING AND VEGETABLE GARDEN PROJECT

Community Development is one of the four focus areas of Community Chest. Our aim is to uplift, empower and mentor our beneficiaries to become sustainable. Feeding projects are of fundamental importance as this is the sole hope of survival for thousands of people. The drought we are experiencing is a major threat to our food security.

As a result thereof food prices are exorbitant and the vulnerable are negatively impacted. Community Chest would like to start up vegetable gardens at all our feeding projects in the metro. Not only will they be able to feed thousands of people but they will improve the health of the community. There is great nutritional value in vegetables.

HEALTH AND SAFETY PLANS FOR DAYCARE CENTRES

All beneficiaries of the Community Chest undergo a thorough due diligence process where they are screened in order to meet our funding criteria. After doing our due diligence process it became apparent that most of the Day Care Centres have no training in the basic Health and Safety requirements.

Our objective is to implement Health and Safety programmes. We will touch on 8 simple facts that can have a vital impact on all our Day Care Centres. Each Centre will receive training in First Aid and fire safety. On completion of the training, each one will receive a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher.
