Music lovers are invited to take a break in the middle of the day and enjoy a lively Brass Studio Lunch Hour Concert presented by the Nelson Mandela University Department of Music and Performing Arts.
The concert takes place at the South Campus Auditorium on Wednesday, 22 April 2026, offering audiences a vibrant hour of brass music performed by talented student musicians and the Nelson Mandela University Brass Ensemble.
Spotlight on Student Musicians
The programme opens with a series of solo performances showcasing emerging talent from the university’s Brass Studio.
Featured student performers include:
• Kamvelihle Sanqela on tuba
• Matthew Broom on trombone
• Keriston Esau on trombone
• Jamie Todkill on trumpet
• Larchanette Afrika on trumpet
The soloists will be accompanied by Kobus Buys on piano.
Nelson Mandela University Brass Ensemble
The second half of the programme features the acclaimed Nelson Mandela University Brass Ensemble, performing works by composers von Suppé, Hazel and Elgar.
The ensemble performance highlights the collaborative strength of the university’s brass programme and offers audiences the chance to experience a rich range of brass repertoire.
A Lively Finale
The concert concludes with a vibrant tuba feature, The Carioca by Youmans, conducted by third-year instrumental conducting student Akho Mtakatya and featuring George Foster on tuba.
The performance promises a lively and energetic ending to an hour of dynamic brass music.
