Secret Sunrise Gqeberha Is the Joy Boost We Didn’t Know We Needed

ELEANOR DOUGLAS-MEYERS

You’re in a parking lot at Baywest Mall, the sun is setting like you’re in an abstract painting, you’re wearing headphones, and feeling a little out of your element (or maybe that’s just me), and suddenly—you’re dancing. With strangers. With joy. With zero embarrassment.

Welcome to Secret Sunrise: City Pulse, a global movement that recently brought its magic to Gqeberha—and honestly, we’re better for it.

A Movement of Movement

This past weekend, Gqeberha joined over 50,000 people around the world who’ve experienced Secret Sunrise—an immersive, hour-long guided dance and mindfulness session that turns any public space into a moving meditation. In this case, the Baywest Mall parking area transformed from an ordinary slab of concrete into a full-blown dance sanctuary.

Wearing wireless headphones and led by enthusiastic facilitators, participants were taken on a guided journey blending energising music, breathwork, movement, and play. It was emotional therapy with a beat. And yes, you can quote me on that.

So… Why Should You Go Next Time? Let Me Break It Down for You:

It’s Wildly Different (In the Best Way)

We’re all a little burnt out from the same-old weekend routine: mall → food court → maybe a movie. Secret Sunrise offers a fun, out-the-box experience that shakes up the monotony. You get to move your body, feel something real, and forget about emails, potholes, and traffic for an hour.

The Vibe Is Immaculate—and So Is the Organisation

From the moment you arrive, it’s smooth sailing. I scored a ticket promo (bless!) and was impressed by the punctuality and professionalism. No faffing about. The organisers run this ship tight—and joyful.

And the facilitators? Top-tier. Emily brought Miss Rachel energy for grown-ups—encouraging, animated, and somehow managing to make each person feel personally seen through a pair of headphones. Karla was a radiant burst of sunshine, grounding the group with warmth and presence, while Chengetai brought a calming, soulful vibe that balanced the energy perfectly. It was like being guided by a trio of joy conductors. Flowers all around!

Movement Meets Mindfulness (Even With a Moon Boot)

Full disclosure: I danced with a moon boot on (nursing an injury) And I wasn’t even the most out-there person there. Despite my busted ankle and fear of looking ridiculous, I found myself totally immersed in the rhythm. My husband and son said I did, in fact, look like a fool. Did I care? Not one bit. I was too busy living my best booted-up life.

      Zero Judgment, Just Joy

There’s something freeing about dancing with people who aren’t trying to impress or outshine anyone. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or an awkward toe-tapper, you’re embraced. The space is inclusive and open-hearted—perfect for introverts, extroverts, and everyone in between.

It’s the Ultimate Group Activity (With a Side of Food, Please)

Come with friends, come with family, or come solo and find your people. And when the hour’s up and you’ve sweat out your stress, why not treat yourself to a post-disco meal? (Let’s be honest, it’s what we were all thinking.)

Not Just a Dance. A Global Joy Movement.

Secret Sunrise isn’t a once-off gimmick. It’s part of a worldwide initiative to get one million people moving in joy each month. Originating in South Africa and now dancing across cities from Zurich to Singapore, it’s a reminder that joy is a muscle worth flexing.

Gqeberha, you showed up—and danced your hearts out. Here’s hoping we see more of these sessions popping up soon.

Until next time—bring your people, your water bottle, and maybe leave your inhibitions at home.
