In celebration of Workers’ Day, Shuttuprufe Straundale Field played host to a spirited community sports event, proudly supported by Heineken. While this marks the first time the event has been held at the venue, it’s part of a broader initiative by Heineken to deepen its engagement with employees and neighbouring companies through sport and team-building.

Heineken, a familiar name in the industrial league scene, extended its involvement by backing this inclusive day of friendly competition and camaraderie. The event featured soccer and netball tournaments, bringing together staff from various sites and even inviting teams from surrounding businesses.

Speaking to 041Sport, one of the event organisers, Mr Mfihlelo Maswana, emphasised the intention behind the initiative: “This was never about just winning—it’s about encouraging unity across our Heineken sites and building relationships beyond work. The idea is to promote team-building and get the team to participate at other sites like Adam Tas, Wadeville, and Heineken Sedibeng.”

A participant added, “Hey Bhuti, to be honest, it’s the first time we’ve ever had this event. Heineken usually sticks to the industrial league, but this really brought companies together in a new way.”

Though lighthearted in tone, the tournament still delivered a competitive edge, complete with prizes for standout teams:

Men’s Soccer

  • 1st Prize: Trophy + 15 gold medals
  • 2nd Prize: 15 silver medals

Women’s Netball

  • 1st Prize: Trophy + 10 gold medals
  • 2nd Prize: 10 silver medals

Winners of the Day:

  • Men’s Soccer: Shuttuprufe
  • Netball: Volpes

Beyond the scoreboard, the day served as a celebration of connection and recognition. “We just wanted to enjoy our May Day as workers,” said Mr Maswana. “Next year, we’re aiming bigger—more teams, a two-day event, proper referees, and maybe even food stalls for the community.”

With its vibrant mix of sport, celebration, and unity, the inaugural Workers’ Day event at Shuttuprufe set a strong foundation for what organisers hope will become an annual tradition.
